Knotweed behind Wirral garden walls: what to look for

How tall boundary walls and hedges hide knotweed, and the seasonal signs to watch for.

Knotweed behind Wirral garden walls: what to look for

Many Wirral gardens are bounded by high sandstone walls or thick hedges. They are handsome, but they hide what grows on the other side, and knotweed can sit unnoticed for years before it pushes through at the base.

The signs

Red-purple shoots at the foot of a wall in spring, a stand of tall canes above the wall line in summer, or dry brown canes in winter.

What to do

Leave it, take a photo and send it to us. If it is knotweed, the survey shows how far it runs under your garden and into the neighbours'.

Quick answers

Can I look over the wall to check?
Yes, but do not enter land you have no right to. Photograph what you can see from your side and send it over.
