Check first

Most of what people ring about turns out to be something harmless.

Photograph a leaf and a stem and send it through. You will hear back what it is, free of charge. We only suggest a visit if it is knotweed, and you see the price in writing before anything is booked.

Why not wait

Knotweed does not stay the size it is

The canes vanish in winter, which fools people into thinking it has gone. Underground the rhizome carries on, and each year it takes more of the garden.

Japanese knotweed against a garden wall on the New Brighton
Knotweed in New Brighton

Sandstone walls, brooks and the old railway line.

New Brighton is a seaside district of Victorian villas, terraces and a regenerated waterfront. Sandy soil and sea air do not stop knotweed, and neglected plots between properties are where it often takes hold.

A survey shows whether it started on your land or came over the boundary.

Also covering the rest of Wirral — same price, same service.

Questions we get asked

Does coastal ground make a difference to knotweed?
Not much. It grows in most soils, including sandy ground, so gardens near the coast need the same spring check as anywhere else.
How do I know if it is Japanese knotweed?
The stem tells you most: hollow like bamboo, speckled purple, growing in a zig-zag with a node at every kink. Leaves are broad with a flat base. You get small cream flower sprays in late summer and brown dead canes in winter. Sending us a photo is quicker than guessing.
Is it illegal to have knotweed in my garden?
Having it is not against the law. Allowing it to spread into the wild is, and cut material is controlled waste. If it passes to a neighbour you may be open to a claim.
Will knotweed stop me getting a mortgage?
Not by itself. Most lenders accept a professional survey, a treatment plan and a guarantee that can be passed on to the buyer.
How long does treatment take?
Spraying normally spans three to five growing seasons followed by monitoring. Excavation is done in days but costs more.
Can I just dig it out myself?
It is best not to. Small bits of rhizome regrow, and the soil cannot go to a skip or the garden waste bin without proper handling.
Does knotweed damage houses?
It works its way into cracks, drains, walls and light outbuildings. Sound foundations are rarely the problem, but a stand can still hit a valuation or a sale.
What if it is coming from my neighbour?
Get a survey done so the position and direction of spread are recorded. That record is what you show the neighbour or their landlord.

Leave the spade and the strimmer alone for now.

Photo check free. You keep the survey report. Price agreed before work begins.
